| Final Payments Announced for 1995, 1996 Manitoba Floods
[Excerpts from Mar. 31 Government of Canada News Release]
The Honourable John McCallum, Minister of National Defence and Minister Responsible for Emergency Preparedness, today announced the Government of Canada's final payments under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) to the Province of Manitoba for flooding that occurred in 1995 and 1996.
In April 1995, severe flooding along the Red River, Souris River and Assiniboine River (below the Shellmouth Dam) caused extensive damage to provincial, municipal and private property. Similar damage occurred in April 1996 in the Red River Basin area. These payments, which total $2,747,649, bring the total amount of funding provided by Government of Canada for these two floods to almost $6.25 million. Interim payments were provided to Manitoba in 1997.
These payments were made under the terms of the Government of Canada's Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA). DFAA payments are provided directly to a provincial or territorial government to cover eligible costs in accordance with nationally applied guidelines. Since the inception of DFAA in 1970, the Government of Canada has provided almost $1.4 billion in DFAA funding to provinces and territories, of which almost $221 million has been paid to Manitoba.
