The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, awarded Comstock Construction, Inc., of Wahpeton, N.D., a $4 million contract May 16 to construct stage one of its Wahpeton flood control project. The project consists of excavating ponding areas, constructing levees and pumping stations and adding drainage pumps and ditches. This work is expected to begin in June 2003 and be complete in December 2003. A second phase of the project is expected to start in 2004. The entire project, including all land acquisitions, is expected to take three-to-four years to construct and cost around $11 million.

The Corps also awarded Wanzek Construction, Inc., of Fargo, N.D., a $1.9 million contract May 16 as part of its Breckenridge, Minn., flood control project. Stage one of this flood control project consists of constructing a diversion channel designed for a 110-year flood event. The channel will divert high flows of the Otter Tail and Bois de Sioux Rivers to the Red River of the North. The Wanzek contract is for construction of three bridges crossing Highways 75 and 210 and County Road 16. The contract also has an option to add $4.7 million to construct the channel and associated features. The total cost for stage one will be $6.6 million. The entire project, including all land acquisition, is expected to take three-to-five years to construct and cost around $22 million.
