| Corps Releases Draft for Grafton Flood Control Project
[Excerpts from June 12 USACE St. Paul District Press Release]
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, released its draft General Reevaluation Report and Environmental Assessment for a flood control project on the Park River at Grafton, N.D., today. The draft report identifies a recommended flood control plan for the city of Grafton.
The project includes a 2.8-mile bypass channel with diversion and control structures to carry flows in excess of 2,000 cubic feet per second past the city. A 7.9-mile long tieback levee and a 2.8-mile levee along the bypass channel would prevent overland flooding from inundating the city. The permanent project would provide a 100-year level of flood protection to the community.
The draft EA is being distributed to interested local, state, regional and federal agencies, as well as to the public for comment. Copies of it are available at the Carnegie Regional Library in Grafton; the Chester Fritz Library in Grand Forks, N.D.; and on the St. Paul District website (see link below). Any comments on the draft EA should be sent within 30 days to: Chief, Environmental and Economic Analysis Branch, St. Paul District, Corps of Engineers, 190 E. Fifth St., St. Paul, MN 55101 1638.
The final General Reevaluation Report and EA is scheduled for completion in November 2003. Plans and specifications for the first stage of project construction could commence in 2003 and construction could begin in May 2004.
