Grand Forks Takes FY 04 Funding Case to White House
$3 Million Restored for FY 03 Flood Protection Construction

[Excerpts from June 19 Sen. Dorgan, June 17 Sen. Conrad Press Releases]
City officials from Grand Forks will meet in Washington, DC this week with officials from the White House and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to make the case that the President’s proposed budget cut for the Grand Forks flood control project is unwise.
Local officials going to Washington include Mayor Michael Brown and City Council President Hal Gershman for the meeting that is scheduled to take place Wednesday, June 25.

The President’s 2004 budget contains $23 million for the project, about one-third of what is needed to move the project forward on schedule and at full capacity. That level is about $10 million below the level enacted by Congress last year.

The Corps of Engineers has re-programmed $3 million within its existing (FY 03) budget to keep construction work moving on the flood control project for Grand Forks, Senators Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan and Congressman Earl Pomeroy announced June 17. The funds will come from other areas of the Corps's budget where funding is not immediately required or where savings have been identified.
