MN DNR Accepting Comments on Hay Creek Project

[Excerpts from July 8 MN Dept. of Natural Resources News Release]
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has released an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) for public review of a proposed fish and wildlife habitat restoration and flood control project in the Hay Creek watershed in central Roseau County.

The proposed Hay Creek Environmental Rehabilitation and Flood Control project would create a new meandered channel within set-back levees in place of an existing six-mile straight ditch channel for the segment of Hay Creek between State Highway 11 and the Roseau River. At the upstream end of the new channel, a diversion structure would route high flows into a new 1,100-acre permanent pool impoundment. The combination of these two project features will provide enhanced habitat for wildlife and fish and reduce local agricultural land flooding. The project is proposed by the Roseau River Watershed District in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The EAW is a 12-page document with maps that describes the proposed project and identifies potential environmental effects. Attached to and incorporated in the EAW is an environmental report and assessment prepared by the Corps of Engineers that provides detailed information about the proposal. A 30-day public review and comment period for the EAW runs through August 6, 2003.
