MPCA and Corps Sign Agreement for Wetlands Research
[Excerpts from Aug. 5th USACE St. Paul District Press Release]
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency signed a project cooperative agreement July 31 to document drained wetland basins in Minnesota's Minnesota and Red River watersheds.
These agencies will use aerial photography to identify drained, but restorable, wetlands. This documentation will aid the state and federal government in making decisions related to watershed planning, identifying and prioritizing wetland restorations for wildlife habitat, water quality enhancement and floodwater reduction benefits.
The project will begin immediately and is expected to be complete by March 2004. It is estimated to cost $200,000. The Corps of Engineers will provide $100,000, and the MPCA, with support from Ducks Unlimited, will provide the remaining half. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will also participate in this project.
