FEMA Grant Announced for Norman County Buyout

[Excerpts from Aug. 27th Senator Norm Coleman News Release]
Fourteen Norman County homeowners who have experienced the devastation and distress of being flooded out of their homes all too often will never have to worry about that threat again, thanks to emergency relief from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today by Senator Norm Coleman.

FEMA will provide $890,318 to assist the Minnesota Department of Public Safety in purchasing homes historically subject to frequent flooding. These residences, all of which are located in Norman County, experienced severe flooding in 1997, 2001 and 2002, and their destruction will eliminate the devastating cycle of flooding and repair that has plagued their owners and communities. The homeowners volunteered to sell their residences.

This grant was provided through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Once the flood prone homes are demolished, the land on which they sat will remain as open space.
