South Dam Fishway Contract Awarded

[Excerpts from Oct. 28th USACE St. Paul District Press Release]
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, awarded Rising Sun Construction, Inc., of Fargo, N.D., a $768,000 contract Oct. 28 to construct its South Dam Fishway project. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall and be completed within one year.

The project will reduce water velocities, facilitate fish migration, create habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms and improve downstream water quality on the Red River. It involves placing rock fill and boulders to construct a fishway that appears and functions as natural rapids. Fish will be able to swim over the rapids, and the project will eliminate the hydraulic rollers that can trap and drown unsuspecting victims. The project also includes relocating the existing emergency boat ramp and building a portage trail and canoe ramp.

The city of Fargo is the non-federal sponsor for the project. Funding will also come from the city of Moorhead, the Fargo Park District, the Southeast Cass Water Resource District, the Buffalo-Red River Watershed District, the North Dakota Department of Game and Fish, the North Dakota State Water Commission and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
