MN Governor Nominates Clearwater River Project

[Excerpts from Jan. 15th Gov. Pawlenty Press Release]
Governor Tim Pawlenty today announced the nomination of three major watershed projects for funding through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Watershed Initiative. The projects include the Root River Watershed Project, the Hawk Creek Project and the Clearwater River Project. EPA's Watershed Initiative program will award approximately $20 million in grants to as many as 20 watershed projects around the nation.

The Clearwater River Project is a joint project with the Red Lake Nation of Chippewa. The Clearwater River is in the Red River Basin and contributes a significant amount of nutrients and sediment to Hudson Bay in Canada. A major component of this project is the effort by the Red Lake Nation of Chippewa to manage wild rice operations in the watershed to enhance water quality.
