Army Corps of Engineers monitors
Roseau Flood
[Excerpts from May. 14, 2004 U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers News Release] The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
St. Paul District, will spend the next few days monitoring levees it
helped raise and reinforce in Roseau, Minn., May 12-14.
The emergency levee raise was in response to a request from the State of
Minnesota for the Corps of Engineers to provide resources to protect the
city to a stage of 23 feet on the Roseau River, in response to the
forecasted high-water levels.
"The Army Corps of Engineers will continue to work with officials from
Roseau and the State of Minnesota to monitor the integrity of levees until
the water recedes," said David Christenson, St. Paul District readiness
team leader.
Nine Army Corps of Engineers employees are supporting, or have supported,
the flood fight. The Corps hired private contractors to place more than
30,000 cubic yards of materials needed to raise more than 7,000 feet of
levees in the Roseau area. The Corps also provided more than 200,000
sandbags to the city.
