Designed to Help Groups With an Interest
In Water and Aquatic Ecosystems: Ashton
The Manitoba Water Directory will help Manitobans work together on water and
aquatic ecosystem matters, Manitoba Water Stewardship Minister Steve Ashton
said today."The directory is a way to help communications between groups and agencies
that work on our most important resources: water, aquatic ecosystems and
the land that sustains them," said Ashton. "When community groups and
agencies know of each other and their activities, partnerships develop,
networking begins and resources can be shared to solve common problems."
The directory is an extensive listing of federal and provincial government
departments and agencies, non-government groups, professional associations
and community groups that have an interest in water and aquatic ecosystems.
"We have found that, many times, organizations and groups didn't know each
other existed and in fact had complementary objectives," said Ashton. "This
directory is a simple, but effective, way of putting Manitobans in touch
with each other and appropriate government departments and agencies."
Ashton said the directory is the first step in a longer process of helping
Manitobans become more effective in addressing water related matters. "As
we have stated in the Manitoba Water Strategy: 'We will continue to build
capacity for Manitobans to conserve our valuable water resources in
partnership with all levels of government, industry, interest groups and
individuals.'," said the minister. "The more we work to develop the skills,
knowledge and stewardship attitudes of individuals, organizations or
communities through education, extension and community development, the more
secure our water and our future will be."
Groups or agencies that are not listed in the directory but would like to be
may do so by providing their information online to Manitoba Water
Stewardship.
