Corps of Engineers Awards $1 Million Emergency Contract for Additional Protection at Devils Lake, N.D.

SAINT PAUL, MINN. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, awarded Park Construction Company, of Minneapolis, a $1 million contract Aug. 20 to begin raising an existing Corps' levee in Devils Lake, N.D.

The project consists of raising the existing levee three additional feet to a top elevation of 1,460 feet above mean sea level.  The design includes new levee sections in low-lying areas and the extension of the existing levees to high ground.  The work is expected to begin this fall and be completed in the fall of 2005.  The total construction cost of the levee raise will be approximately $6 million, with the additional portions being awarded when real estate and funding become available.

The flood reduction project consists of building levees to protect the community of Devils Lake. Although referred to as levees, the system is actually designed and constructed as a dam to hold back water for many decades.
