Abstract:
Major watershed boundaries for the Red River of the North Basin. The merging together of watersheds boundaries from various sources and at various scales resulted in the creation of 36 sub-basins. The resulting data set is at a approximate scale of 1:250,000, but in Minnesota the scale is much better. The resulting data set produced continuous coverage for both Canada and the United States.
Purpose:
To produce a uniform watershed boundary dataset at 1:250,000 within the Red River of the North Basin, covering the United States and Canada. Prior to the merging of this dataset it was difficult to show a graphic representation of drainage divides in the basin. The main purpose for the creation of this dataset is for planning studies and use in graphics of the Red River of the North Basin.
Supplemental_Information:
This data set covers the entire Red River of the North Basin, including the Devil's Lake non-contributing basin. It does not include the contributing Assiniboine River Watershed in Canada.

A variety of data sets were used to compile the Final_basins.shp file: USGS 1:250,000 HUCs(<http://water.usgs.gov/GIS/metadata/usgswrd/huc250k.html>), PFRA Watershed Project minor watershed sub-basins and catchement areas(<http://www.agr.gc.ca/pfra/gis/gwshed.htm>), Environment Canada Major Prairie Basins(<http://www.agr.gc.ca/pfra/gis/readme/sub_ec.htm>), Minnesota DNR 1:24,000 Watersheds(<http://deli.dnr.state.mn.us/metadata/full/mnwshpy3.html>). These data layers were used to create the final, continuous basins layer for the entire Red River Basin. AutoDesk 2002 was used to edit and merge polygons. The basin polygons were imported into ArcView 3.2, where the watershed names were added to the attribute table.
